Former Newcastle striker Mark Viduka named in Australia 'Team of the Century'

Australia have named their ‘Team of the Century’, and it includes former Newcastle United striker Mark Viduka.

2022 represents the 100 year anniversary of the Aussies first competitive football game. They will mark the occasion with a game against New Zealand.

The Socceroos have also named a 23-man squad and coaching setup that is deemed their all-time team of the past 100 years. It has been selected by fans and Australian football historians. And it includes a former Newcastle player.

Viduka is one of the forwards named in the squad. However, he will be better remembered for his time at Celtic and Leeds than his days at St James’ Park.

The striker spent two years on Tyneside, scoring seven goals in 40 appearances. He was slightly more prolific for his country, scoring 11 goals in 43 Australia apppearances.

But Viduka was known for more than just goals, and a young Australian forward who could be on his way to Newcastle will hope to follow in his footsteps.

Emerging Australia star could be on his way to Newcastle

As Australia pay homage to their past, they also have an emerging star in their ranks.

18-year-old Garang Kuol has been called up to the national team for the first time, despite not actually starting a competitive game for his club yet. He has appeared off the bench for Central Coast Mariners, and impressed by scoring four goals.

That’s why he’s already in the Australia setup, and it’s why Newcastle are trying to win the race to sign him. According to the Athletic, the Magpies are in advanced negotiations to sign the wonderkid forward.

He would be another exciting youth addition for Newcastle, who are snapping up stars of the future as well as the present since Dan Ashworth’s arrival.

Kuol certainly has a lot of hype around him, and he will be an Australia regular if fulfils his potential.

If he continues to shine and seal a move to Newcastle, perhaps he will eventually be named in Australia’s all-time squad just like Viduka.

Hopefully he joins Eddie Howe’s side in January and he can go on to become the star he’s being tipped to be.
