Newcastle target Bamba Dieng endures a nightmare transfer deadline day

Newcastle United target Bamba Dieng nearly moved to the Premier League on transfer deadline day, but ended up having a 24 hours to forget.

The 22-year-old was linked with a move away from Marseille all summer, with manager Igor Tudor keen to move the forward on to facilitate the arrival of Alexis Sanchez.

Now the transfer window is closed, and Marseille have got their man in Sanchez. But they also still have Dieng too.

What happened on transfer deadline day with Bamba Dieng

While a move to Newcastle wasn’t on the cards for Dieng, it did look like he was at least on his way to England.

A £10million fee had reportedly been agreed with Leeds, and he was set to travel to Yorkshire for a medical. But that didn’t happen.

Instead of boarding a private jet from France to England, his agent negotiated a deal with Ligue 1 side Nice. Dieng travelled their instead, meaning a move to Leeds was off.

But that wasn’t the only twist in the tale. The Senegal international then failed his medical with Nice, and he remains a Marseille player.

There is still a chance his move to Nice could be resurrected because of Ligue 1 rules, but it looks like Newcastle have got away with one here.

Lucky escape for Newcastle

The forward has been linked with a move to St James’ Park all year. He was rumoured in January, and the noises continued this summer.

Reports in France claim that Newcastle made a bid for Dieng, but it was below Marseille’s asking price. There were also claims from 90min that he was wanted in the North East.

In hindsight, it feels like Dieng is a player who has been offered to Newcastle, rather than Newcastle pursuing Dieng.

Regardless, Eddie Howe and co have avoided potential disaster. Considering how is deadline day panned out, Newcastle making a move for the 2022 AFCON champion could have been a huge mistake.

Newcastle got a forward in the end, bringing in Alexander Isak from Real Sociedad. And thank goodness we did rather than signing Dieng.
