Newcastle’s Callum Wilson is ‘making good progress’ as he looks to return from injury before the end of the season.
The striker hasn’t played for the Magpies since December 27th. Newcastle took on Manchester United that night, drawing 1-1. However, Wilson didn’t finish the game.
He limped off shortly before half time, with everyone associated with the club sweating over his fitness.
It was initially reported that he could be out for eight weeks, but sadly that hasn’t been the case. Newcastle hoped he’d be back for the Brighton game, but that has been and gone.
In February, Eddie Howe said: “Hopefully he returns for the last few games of the season.”
That was a huge blow at the time, but luckily Newcastle have been able to go on a run and move away from the relegation zone.
Callum Wilson puts no timeframe on injury return
Speaking on the Footballer’s Football Podcast with Michail Antonio, Wilson provided an update on his comeback.
“Getting there slowly, making good progress,” Wilson said.
“Should be out on the pitches very soon which would be good. And then that way you know you’re very close to a return but I can’t really give you a firm update as to when I’ll be back as I still don’t know.”
No need for Wilson to rush back
It would be brilliant to see Wilson back in a Newcastle United shirt again. He’s been a huge miss, with Chris Wood scoring just once in his absence.
But the Magpies have still been playing well and scoring goals. Howe’s side are now 14th in the league, nine points clear of the bottom three.
With that in mind, there is no need for Newcastle to rush Wilson back. He can afford to take his time and ensure he comes back 100%.
Wilson will be desperate to return – it will have been difficult to watch his teammates do so well without him.
But it’s encouraging to see the Magpies do so well without their best striker. They’ve also been able to perform without Kieran Trippier and Allan Saint-Maximin.
Wilson’s comments on his return sound positive, but it will likely be the final few games of the season as Howe anticipated back in February.
