Dan Ashworth is working his magic again as Newcastle United Sporting Director, as he prepares to welcome Tino Livramento to St James’ Park.

Following the signings of Sandro Tonali and Harvey Barnes, the Magpies are closing in on their third summer addition. It was reported on Thursday that Newcastle had agreed a deal with Southampton to sign Livramento.

The 20-year-old is now due to undergo a medical on Tyneside, with the club hoping that he can actually make his debut in this weekend’s Sela Cup at St James’ Park. Howe’s side play Fiorentina on Saturday and Villarreal on Sunday, and the Toon boss is hoping that Livramento can make an appearance in one of those games.

That would be a quick turnaround for the defender, who is being brought in because of his potential, as Ashworth continues to plan for the future.

How Newcastle feel about Tino Livramento

According to i News, Newcastle believe that getting Livramento is a ‘coup’, despite the large fee that he is going to cost. There are varying reports about how much Newcastle are paying, but it looks like it is going to be between £35million and £40million.

That is a lot of money for someone who is not going to be a starter this season, especially with Newcastle’s budget being limited due to FFP.

But Livramento is being brought in with an eye towards the future, with i News adding that the club believe he has ‘tremendous potential’.

We saw that during his debut year at Southampton, where he quickly proved what a huge mistake Chelsea had made in letting him go.

Now he is on his way to Newcastle, where he joins an exciting project with a clear end goal. The Toon owners want Newcastle to be a sustainable club at the top of the table that consistently competes for honours. That is why they are signing players who can improve and get better on Tyneside.

Livramento will look to do just that, as he prepares to act as understudy for Kieran Trippier. As a right-back, there aren’t many players better than Trippier to learn from.

The experience should serve Livramento well, as he looks to develop into a star at St James’ Park.
