While he has not necessarily delivered on the pitch, Anthony Gordon has made a real impression at Newcastle United since his £45million arrival.

The 22-year-old struggled at times in the months following his big money move to Tyneside, while Gordon also had a coming together with Eddie Howe that did not reflect well on the former Everton winger.

But that is now long forgotten, and the future is bright in black and white for Gordon. The club have high hopes, and believe that he is going to develop into a key player next season.

He will certainly return full of confidence, having just won the Under-21 European Championship. Not only that, but Gordon was also named player of the tournament.

What has surprised Anthony Gordon at Newcastle

Gordon ended last season in style, netting his first Newcastle goal in a 1-1 draw with Chelsea. Hopefully it is a sign of things to come, but the youngster was very honest in his post-match interview.

He admitted that the past year had been tough, and that he was shocked by how fit you need to be to play for Eddie Howe.

The increase in intensity has surprised Gordon, but a new report from the Athletic suggests that he is already doing a great job.

According to the Athletic, Newcastle staff were immediately impressed with how fit and physical Gordon is after he signed for the club.

That is very positive, considering it is perhaps an area that Gordon thought he was behind in. But he clearly has a base level of fitness and work ethic that the club believe is more than adequate.

It is the perfect building block ahead of his first full season at St James’ Park, where Gordon is expected to emerge into a star.

He appears to have the right attitude, while his application is brilliant. He is a hard worker who can press high up the pitch, which is exactly what Howe wants from his players.

Over the summer we have seen him get goals and assists for England, which hopefully he can replicate in a Newcastle shirt.

If he can combine that with his fitness, physicality and work rate then the Magpies have a major star in their ranks.
