Things haven’t gone totally to plan since Matty Longstaff left Newcastle for Aberdeen.

The midfielder joined the Scottish side on a season-long loan deal, after a frustrating time at St James’ Park.

After breaking into the first-team, Longstaff has struggled for minutes in the Premier League. In total, he played just five times last season.

A loan move was deemed best for all parties – although at the time it was assumed that Newcastle would at least make a few more signings.

Of course, that didn’t happen.

But the move to Pittodrie looked like a great opportunity for Longstaff, even if it did divide fans. Regardless, Aberdeen supporters were ecstatic with the 21-year-old’s arrival.

However, they may feel differently right now.

Longstaff has started three times for Stephen Glass’ side so far, and is yet to taste victory. He’s also yet to complete 90 minutes.

The academy graduate was dropped after two games, but returned to the starting XI against Celtic on Sunday.

Aberdeen were beaten 2-1, and fans were far from happy with Longstaff’s performance. He was replaced after 88 minutes, which was too late for some fans.

‘Way off the pace’ and ‘one of the worst loan signings we’ve had’ sum up what has been an awful start to life north of the border.

Here’s hoping things improve soon for Longstaff.
