AFC Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly has made the Championship ‘Team of the Season’. The defender was linked with Newcastle United in January, and the Magpies could move for him this summer. (The Mirror (06/02, pg 65).
The centre-back has had a strong campaign for the Cherries. Additonally, he’s the captain of ex-Toon midfielder Scott Parker’s side. At only 23-years-old he has the potential to be an exciting prospect and will be hoping he can be playing in the Premier League soon.
The Magpies could be set for a busy summer. Some fans will expect plenty of Newcastle transfer news, not just in terms of new arrivals, but departures too.
Newcastle should look to bring in more proven defenders than Kelly
A number of defenders since the new owners arrived have been reported in regards to Newcastle transfer news. There have been some exciting names including Sven Botman. Amanda Stevely has stated she still wants to sign the Dutchman, per The Athletic.
There’s no doubt Lloyd Kelly could become a top player, but with the new wealth they have, they should look elsewhere. The project will attract many top names and with safety almost secured, having Premier League will be a big pull factor.
Dan Burn and Fabian Schar have been impressive at the back for Newcastle. However, they’ll look to strengthen their depth at the back. Federico Fernandez and Ciaran Clark haven’t featured much this season and could part this summer.

Aside from Jamaal Lascelles, some fans will want to see some new defenders signed this summer. It could be an issue should they suffer injuries in defence unless it’s addressed.
Furthermore, Bournemouth currently sits in an automatic promotion position. So they’ll be looking to be playing in the Premier League next season. Kelly might feel he should stick around so he can get consistent first-team football in England’s top flight.
