Newcastle United transfer target Darwin Nunez is expected to leave Benfica this summer with several Premier League clubs interested in him.

The 22-year-old scored two goals in Benfica’s 3-0 win against Vitoria de Guimaraes in the Primeira Liga yesterday.

That took the Uruguayan international’s goalscoring tally for the season to 25 goals from 30 matches across all competitions.

Benfica’s number nine has already surpassed his previous best goalscoring campaign and looks to set to be one of the most coveted players across Europe ahead of the summer transfer window.

Nunez has 20 goals in the Portuguese top-flight and after Luis Diaz departed Porto for Liverpool, it looks like Benfica’s main man is going to win the golden boot at a canter.

Braga’s Ricardo Horta is six goals behind Nunez with 11 league games left to be played.

Diaz had 14 goals from 18 league games at Porto this season, but the Colombian got his big-money move to Merseyside last month.

It looks like Nunez could be following in the footsteps of his fellow South American with Premier League clubs chasing his signature.

Calciomercato journalist Rudy Galleti has revealed that Nunez will leave the Portuguese giants in the summer if his €80m valuation is met.

With Callum Wilson struggling to overcome his injury issues and Chris Wood a different type of striker, Newcastle’s Saudi-led consortium may look to go big in the striker department in the summer.

All being well, Eddie Howe will have secured our Premier League status and then PIF can move towards starting the next phase of the club’s ambitious project.

Earlier this month, the Mirror reported that Newcastle are looking to reignite their interest in Nunez in the next window.

Only Robert Lewandowski (28) has scored more league goals than Nunez across Europe’s top leagues so far this season.

Newcastle have already show we mean business with the signings we made last month, but beating other Premier League clubs to the signature of Darwin Nunez would be a massive statement of intent.
