Michael Emenelo is reportedly leading the race to become Newcastle United’s director of football.

That’s according to multiple outlets, with the Telegraph stating that Emenalo flew to Saudi Arabia for talks with the Magpies’ new owners.

The 56-year-old is reportedly a fan of Eddie Howe, who was appointed as Newcastle’s new manager on Monday.

That’s good news for Howe, as their relationship will be pivotal to Newcastle’s success – assuming Emenalo signs on the dotted line.

There have been plenty of big names linked with director roles at St James’ Park since the takeover went through. Most of them have big reputations, and would symbolise a seismic shift in attitude at St James’ Park.

Names such as Michael Edwards, Ralf Rangnick and Marc Overmars have summed up the calibre of director the new Newcastle owners are targeting. And it looks like they might be able to get someone of similar stature.

Emenalo is a huge name in football. His time at Chelsea saw a plethora of incredibly talented players arrive at Stamford Bridge. While some of them didn’t hit the heights in blue, that’s not his fault.

He brought Romelu Lukaku, Kevin de Bruyne and Mo Salah to England – three players who have gone on to become some of the world’s best away from Chelsea.

With the right combination of director and manager, Emenalo can help take Newcastle away from the relegation zone and up the Premier League table.

He would be an incredibly exciting appointment, and these Newcastle fans feel the same. They are buzzing about the possibility of Emenalo becoming the Magpies’ director of football.
