While Newcastle United are struggling, Rafa Benitez is flying high at Everton.

The Spaniard replaced Carlo Ancelotti at Goodison Park this summer, and received a lot of backlash due to his Liverpool past.

But Benitez has got off to an excellent start, with his new side fifth in the Premier League and just one point off top after six games.

Meanwhile, Steve Bruce and Newcastle are in 17th and without a win.

The Magpies endured a difficult summer too, with Joe Willock the only senior arrival. His move from Arsenal cost Newcastle £25million. That was all they could afford, with no one else heading to St James’ Park.

Everton had a much busier summer, but didn’t actually spend a lot of cash. They spent £1.7million on Demarai Gray, and brought in Andros Townsend, Salomon Rondon and Asmir Begovic on frees.

But despite the lack of money spent so far, Benitez has been full of praise for his new employers.

“We have an owner that wants to spend money,” he said.

“After my last experience in the Premier League, not spending any money, it is great to have owners with this spirit.”

Wow, subtle…

Benitez never got the backing he needed at St James’ Park. While he did spend big amounts of money at times, particularly ahead of the Championship season, that was doable because of player sales.

Rafa had ambition for the club, wanting to improve the training facilities. But that didn’t happen. He didn’t always get it right in the transfer window, but his intentions were good.

Since his departure Newcastle have spent big at times, with Ayoze Perez the only major departure. However, it hasn’t delivered results, with Bruce’s side often struggling.

Seeing Benitez thrive at his new club is difficult to watch for Toon fans, who are desperate for a future without Ashley.
