Some Newcastle United fans were looking away in horror last night, as Salomon Rondon officially made his return to Premier League action, and Andros Townsend scored a stunning goal.

The Venezuelan came off the bench for Everton during their Monday Night Football victory over Burnley, sent on by none other than former Toon boss Rafa Benitez.

Rondon was snapped up by the Toffees on transfer deadline day.

He had spent the past couple of years in China with Dalian Professional, whom Benitez managed after leaving St. James’ Park.

Rondon’s move to Goodison Park did not cost the Toffees anything in terms of a transfer fee.

He signed a two-year deal, and has the option of a third should things go well.

Some Newcastle fans had been hoping the Magpies would make a go of signing Rondon.

He was a very popular figure during his loan spell, and scored 12 goals in 33 appearances for the club.

Famously, Mike Ashley would not sanction a permanent move for Rondon at the end of that spell.

It is thought that Rondon’s advancing years were a key reason for declining to trigger the buy option.

Well Rondon is now back in English football, and seeing him sent onto the field by Benitez last night was a bit much for some Magpies fans.

Townsend, another ex-Magpie, also featured last night and scored what will no doubt be a contender for Goal of the Month.

Everton’s 3-1 victory over the Clarets means they are now level on points with Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United at the top of the table, making the situation even worse for Toon fans:
