It looks like Newcastle United have signed a star of the future in Yankuba Minteh.
Newcastle’s summer signings had a huge focus on the club’s future, with the Magpies investing heavily in the likes of Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento.
We also saw the club spend money on a young man from Danish club Odense BK, who arrived at St James’ Park for £6million. It was a decent investment for a rather unknown quantity.
However, the fact that he was immediately loaned out to Champions League side Feyenoord was an early indication that we may just have snapped up something of a wonderkid.
Having spent pre-season with the Rotterdam club, Minteh has already scored his first senior goal for Feyenoord, and it was certainly a strike to remember.
Yankuba Minteh scores fantastic first goal for Feyenoord
Minteh scored Feyenoord’s fifth during a 5-1 win over Utrecht on Sunday. It was a wonderful goal from the 19-year-old, who showed real composure and confidence in the final third.
The Gambian was played in behind and through on goal, then had the guile and skill to go past the Utrecht goalkeeper with ease. He wasn’t finished there though, as he checked back past another player before smashing the ball into an empty net – much to the anger of Utrecht defender Mark van der Maarel, who tried to smash to ball off of Minteh out of frustration.
It was brave. It was brash. It was arrogant. It was everything you want to see from a winger – particularly one who plays for Newcastle United.
The Magpies have had their fair share of flashy wingers, and Minteh looks like he could be the next.
His goal was extremely well taken, and Toon fans are now really eager to see him in Eddie Howe’s first team as soon as possible.
Newcastle fans stunned by Minteh’s goal on Sunday
A lot of Newcastle fans have responded to an official video of Minteh’s goal on Twitter, and it is fair to say they are impressed with what they saw.
One supporter wrote: “This level of composure is really something we lack on the wings. Hopefully he continues this form and we get to see him in the black and white next season.”
A second fan added: “If this continues, we won’t be loaning him out again next season.”
“Can’t wait to have him back next season. Again we need to think long term and Dan Ashworth is doing a good job behind the scenes,” a third wrote.
“Get him back in the squad in January based on that piece a skill alone,” said a fourth member of the Toon Army.
A fifth fan asked an interesting question: “Is there a recall option on his loan?”
Finally, a sixth Newcastle supporter wrote: “Looks like the right winger we need.”
Fans are really excited about what the future holds for Minteh, and it will be interesting to see what the club decide to do next summer if he continues to shine like this for Feyenoord.
