Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes admits he’s never seen a player other than Nick Woltemade get cramps after just forty-five minutes.

While Newcastle United’s club-record signing enjoyed a brilliant debut for the club on Saturday by scoring a fine header against Wolves, the German international had to come off just after the hour mark at St James’ Park.

Woltemade revealed he was suffering a cramp, such is the intensity of life in the Premier League.

Still, Woltemade is expected to be fit for Newcastle against Barcelona in the Champions League on Thursday.

The Brazilian midfielder was speaking at a press conference ahead of Newcastle United vs Barcelona in the Champions League on Thursday night.

It is a huge game for Eddie Howe’s side. They return to the elite stage of European football for the first time in two years and the visit of the Spanish champions is quite the welcoming.

Ahead of the game, Guimaraes was speaking about his new teammate.

While he expressed delight at Woltemade’s debut goal, he admitted he’s never seen a player suffer from cramp so quickly.

“I like him a lot, he’s impressed me in training as well,” he said.

“He’s very young and we’ve seen he’s not used to the Premier League pace, getting cramps after 45 minutes – I’ve never seen this before!”

Nick Woltemade needs to stay fit for Newcastle United now

It’s natural that Woltemade would feel the pace of the Premier League on his debut, particularly after a period in which he was flying around Europe playing for Germany over the international break.

He is, sadly, going to need to get used to it.

Howe confirmed at Wednesday’s press conference that fellow new arrival Yoane Wissa would miss around four weeks of action, leaving the Newcastle United squad light.

William Osula and Anthony Gordon are options to step in and ease the burden but Woltemade does not have long to get up to speed.
