Newcastle United return to the Champions League on Thursday in a huge game against Spanish champions Barcelona.

For the second time under Eddie Howe, Newcastle United will take to the Champions League stage.

They host Barca at St James’ Park in a heavyweight fixture as elite European football returns to Tyneside.

It’s a fantastic game for all involved and many neutrals will no doubt be watching on.

With that in mind, here’s all you need to know.

Newcastle United vs Barcelona team news

Yoane Wissa will not play for Newcastle against Barcelona, having suffered a knee injury during the international break earlier this month.

Anthony Gordon will likely play despite his Premier League suspension, while Nick Woltemade looks set to shake off cramps after asking to come off in Saturday’s win against Wolves.

Jacob Ramsey will not play for Newcastle again until October. It will be fascinating to see how Howe sets up against Hansi Flick’s side. He could feasibly play three at the back and bring either Sven Botman or Malick Thiaw into the team.

Frenkie De Jong could start for Barcelona, while Alejandro Balde, Gavi and Marc Andre Ter-Stegen are injured. Lamine Yamal did not travel due to a groin injury.

Newcastle United vs Barcelona prediction

It seems fair to assume Newcastle will raise their game here. They generally have on these kinds of nights under Howe, particularly at home.

Barca’s high defensive line does offer Newcastle the chance to hurt them and, with Woltemade up and running already, it seems reasonable to expect them to score.

Defensively, they’ve largely been brilliant all season too.

Quite whether they have enough to stop Barca, however, is a different matter. They were thrilling at times last season and have won their last three La Liga games after a draw on the opening weekend.

Even without Yamal, they have some fantastic talents and look like slight favourites here.

Score prediction: Newcastle United 1-2 Barcelona

Head to head (h2h) history and results

Tino Asprilla’s hat-trick famously saw Newcastle beat Barcelona in the Champions League back in 1997, although that is their only competitive win against the Catalan giants.

Following that defeat, Barca went on to win their next three games against Newcastle.
