In an alternative universe, Dan Ashworth could be preparing for work with Manchester United rather than Newcastle United.
But between now and the end of the year, Ashworth will begin work as the Toon’s sporting director.
After a lengthy process that saw the Magpies linked with big names like Michael Emenalo and Michael Edwards, it was reported in February that Ashworth is the man who the new owners want to lead the exciting project at St James’ Park.
He resigned from his role at Brighton, immediately going on gardening leave. It looked like his move to the North East was imminent, but things weren’t that straightforward.
Newcastle have to agree compensation with the Seagulls to end his notice period early. If not, he won’t be able to start working with the club until November.

Manchester United made contact with Dan Ashworth
According to the Athletic, Man United made contact with Ashworth about a role at the Red Devils. This was before he agreed a move to Newcastle at the start of the year, after they caught wind that he could be about to leave his role at the Amex.
The report adds that, despite making contact, Man United didn’t make an official move to bring the 51-year-old to Old Trafford. They didn’t make him an offer. They didn’t invite him for an interview.
Instead, he’ll be heading to Newcastle before the end of 2022. He’s going to be in charge of leading the Newcastle project, ensuring every strand of the club is pulling in the same direction. The philosophy and blueprint of the club will run through him.
He’s got a big job on his hands, but a similar role at Man United would have been even tougher. They are in disarray right now, both on and off the pitch.
Newcastle are the complete opposite, and seem perfectly poised for success in the coming years.
