Newcastle United will reportedly try to sign James Maddison in January, and pundit Danny Murphy thinks he would be an excellent addition at St James’ Park.
The Magpies tried to secure his services in the summer, but Dan Ashworth’s two bids fell short of Leicester City’s valuation.
Maddison remained at the King Power, but will reportedly be targeted again once the transfer window reopens. According to the Times, Newcastle will make a third bid for the 25-year-old if the Foxes lower their asking price.
He was valued at £60million during the summer, which was too much for Newcastle.
It remains to be seen how much money Leicester will ask for in January, but Murphy believes the England international is exactly what Howe is missing in midfield.
Murphy on Maddison possibly going to Newcastle
The former Liverpool midfielder has appeared on TalkSPORT. He discussed Newcastle’s plan to move for Maddison again alongside Jim White and Simon Jordan.
“He’s [Maddison] a terrific player,” Murphy said.
“He would give them something they haven’t got. He’s probably one of the most creative…well he is one of the most creative players in the Premier League.
“He makes things happen. He’s courageous on the ball. Got a great eye for a pass. He plays free. I like Maddison, he plays free, he never hides away. He’s happy making mistakes, trying to make things happen.
“He’d be a really good signing.”

Murphy’s description of Maddison explains why he would be such a good signing for Newcastle.
In recent weeks we’ve lacked the bravery and creativity needed to break down stubborn defences. We have came up against teams in a low block and really struggled to break them down.
That’s where Maddison could make the difference. As Murphy says, he’s brave in possession and takes risks. He’s willing to make a mistake to try and provide that killer moment in the final third.
He’s shown for Leicester that he is one of the Premier League’s best attacking midfielders. The former Norwich ace has provided goals and assists in every season he has played in the top flight.
This season he’s got four goal contributions from six games, while last season he got 20 in total.
Those kind of numbers show why Leicester want so much money for him. But will Newcastle be prepared to pay it in January?
Maddison has the potential to be a fan favourite at St James’ Park – he’s the kind of attacker who would be adored on Tyneside. So let’s hope Ashworth can work his magic and sign him in the New Year.
