Newcastle transfer news: Magpies want Leicester to lower Maddison asking price

Newcastle United failed to meet Leicester City’s asking price for James Maddison in the summer, but are considering a fresh move for the midfielder.

The Magpies are continuing to be linked with the 25-year-old, who was recently left out of Gareth Southgate’s England squad. That’s despite a strong start to the season that has seen Maddison provide four goal contributions in six Premier League games.

But while he is playing well, the Foxes are not. Brendan Rodgers’ side are bottom of the table and without a win.

It is looking grim for Leicester, and there is a chance they could lose one of their star players when the transfer window reopens.

The Northern Echo have claimed that Maddison is Eddie Howe’s number one target in January, and the Times have provided some more information on Newcastle’s interest.

Leicester must lower James Maddison’s asking price first

According to the Times, Newcastle will revive their interest in Maddison – but only if Leicester lower their asking price.

The Magpies made two offers for him during the summer window, but both were rejected. The second offer was worth £45million, but it still wasn’t enough for the Foxes to say yes.

They wanted £60million for the ‘outstanding‘ Maddison, which was deemed too much by the Toon decision makers. Their asking price wasn’t met, and now Newcastle want them to lower it in January.

And they might have to given his contract situation. Maddison will have 18 months left on his deal when January arrives, meaning his value is constantly decreasing.

Leicester could find themselves in a very difficult position come January, especially if results haven’t improved. Do they cash in on their star players and look to reinvest to try and avoid relegation? Or do they stick with what they’ve got in the hope it will keep them up?

Newcastle offered £45million in the summer, and you would imagine they would be prepared to offer that amount again. Maddison is certainly worth it, and we are massively missing a player of his creative talents.

Howe’s side are playing well this season, but lack cutting edge in the final third. Maddison would have provided that, which is why he is once again set to bet targeted in January.

However, Newcastle will only make a move if Leicester lower their £60million asking price.
