Newcastle United have been linked with signing James Maddison and Jack Harrison this summer, and this weekend proved why they want them.

While the Magpies got off to a perfect start by beating Nottingham Forest 2-0, multiple Toon targets were in action for their current employers.

Eddie Howe is currently looking for forwards who can bring more goals and assists to his Newcastle team. That is why they have made bids for Leicester star Maddison and Leeds winger Harrison.

However, both players have so far proven to be too expensive. Newcastle have had two bids rejected for Maddison, while Leeds’ owner recently stated that Harrison is going nowhere.

That’s not what the Magpies want to hear, and the duo’s performances this weekend will only have increased Newcastle’s desire to sign them.

Maddison and Harrison were two of the most creative players in the Premier League this weekend

Leeds kicked off their new season with a 2-1 win over Wolves, where Harrison was instrumental. He provided the assist for their first goal of the game, which was scored by Rodrigo.

Maddison also got an assist on the opening weekend, as his corner allowed Timothy Castagne to give Leicester the lead against Brentford on Sunday. However, it was a disappointing end to the afternoon for Maddison and co. They squandered a two goal lead to draw 2-2 with the Bees.

Two of Newcastle’s targets have already got their first assists of the season, and they could have got more given how many chances they created.

In fact, no players outside of the traditional ‘big six’ clubs created more chances than Maddison and Harrison this past weekend.

The Leeds 25-year-old was the most productive, creating seven chances for his teammates. He was then followed by Maddison, who create five chances.

In comparison, Newcastle’s most creative players were Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton, who both created three chances each. They were our best players on Saturday.

The numbers boasted by Harrison and Maddison prove exactly why Howe wants them at St James’ Park. We need more goals, so getting someone who can create more chances is only going to help.

However, both players are proving to be unattainable at the minute. Harrison in particular might be impossible to land given what Andrea Radrizzani said last week.

As for Maddison, it has been reported that a third bid is being considered by Newcastle. It will need to be a big one if it’s going to be accepted by Leicester.
