Michael Owen sent a message to Newcastle United immediately after their Carabao Cup final victory over Liverpool.

Newcastle United have finally ended their 70-year wait for a trophy with a brilliant 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Wembley.

The win was celebrated by thousands of Newcastle fans in London and even more back home on Tyneside. Alan Shearer was spotted celebrating in the crowd, while Elliot Anderson joined fans at Wembley.

Newcastle fans had Wembley shaking when Alexander Isak doubled the lead in the second half. Supporters generated an electric atmosphere and it was clear that it meant so much more to the travelling Toon fans.

Fans will not have fond memories of Michael Owen and his time at Newcastle, but he immediately sent a message to the club after the Carabao Cup final victory.

Owen ‘regrets’ joining Newcastle in 2005, and his refusal to play in 2009 left a bitter taste in the mouths of Newcastle fans.

He is one of 26 footballers who have played for Liverpool and Newcastle, but Newcastle fans will have a sneaky suspicion that he wasn’t supporting those in black and white on Sunday afternoon.

After Newcastle upset the odds and beat Liverpool at Wembley, Owen sent a message to his former team congratulating them on the victory.

“Incredible occasion at Wembley. Nobody can deny NUFC deserved that. Brilliant performance. I wonder how long the celebrations will last?!” Owen posted on X.

Eddie Howe had to get his tactics right against Liverpool and his game plan ended up being spot on.

Just weeks before the final, Howe’s tactics were questioned when Newcastle suffered defeat to Liverpool in the Premier League.

But Newcastle approached the final with the right mentality – to get after this Liverpool side from the very first minute. Arne Slot was outsmarted by Howe and Newcastle were deserved winners.

The stats certainly prove it…

Newcastle had more than twice as many shots as Liverpool, and three times as many on target.

Mohamed Salah was silenced by Tino Livramento, who was playing out of position at left-back. Newcastle’s midfield also dominated a Liverpool midfield who have thrived in the Premier League this season.

Without a late mistake that gifted Liverpool a way back into the game, it was a comfortable and dominant display from Howe’s side.
