Paul Merson thinks that Kieran Trippier was one of the best signings made by any club in the Premier League during the January transfer window.

He was the first one through the door at St James’ Park following the takeover and that perhaps helped convince other players to join.

For SportsKeeda, Merson said Trippier was the league’s fifth best signing of the last month and the most important of the new faces on Tyneside.

“Newcastle weren’t at the bottom of the Premier League solely because their right-back wasn’t good enough, but I think this is a good signing.

“Kieran Trippier is an England international and has played for Atletico Madrid – a club that masterfully kept clean sheets in Europe.

“Trippier will also be a very vocal presence in the dressing room. He brings a lot of experience with him and could make a difference behind the scenes as well.

“Of all the Newcastle United signings, Kieran Trippier stands out as the most important one.”

Trippier is a top professional, someone with experience of playing at the very highest level and took the plunge to come to Newcastle before any other reinforcements did.

That adds up to make him a vital signing, although Chris Wood is the man charged with scoring the goals to get the Magpies out of trouble.

Bruno Guimaraes is a younger, sought-after talent who could transform midfield, while Dan Burn and Matt Targett will play their part in beefing up the defence.

Everyone will need to play their part and Trippier will be something of a leader in the fight. Alan Shearer thinks he is a future Newcastle captain and it is difficult to disagree.
