Newcastle United’s win against Manchester United shows how solid their defence currently is.

The momentum has completely shifted for Eddie Howe’s side in recent weeks. Many fans would’ve believed Newcastle’s 4-2 defeat to Brentford would be the beginning of a bad patch but it’s been quite the opposite.

Newcastle’s win against Manchester United on Monday night marked Newcastle’s fourth Premier League win in a row – Alexander Isak continued his goalscoring run while Joelinton killed the game off early.

It was Newcastle’s first league win at Old Trafford since 2013 but given the confidence the side had you would’ve believed they win every time they head to the North West.

Goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, who spent time on loan at the Red Devils last season has come in for the injured Nick Pope and barely put a foot wrong so far but Monday’s win once again showed just how far Newcastle have come in recent weeks.

Newcastle defenders help Dubravka to clean sheet statistic

Monday’s win meant that since Dubravka came into the side, he’s kept four consecutive Premier League clean sheets for the first time since joining the Magpies in 2018.

The only other time he came close to this was when he kept three clean sheets in a row during the 2019/20 season.

It’s a new lease of life for the 35-year-old – Dubravka is linked with a move away in January although Howe isn’t keen to let him go while he’s in the starting XI.

Alongside his clean sheets, Dubravka has only needed to make four saves in his four Premier League appearances this season, a testament to how solid Newcastle’s back four has been in recent weeks.

Even with Tino Livramento missing the win against Aston Villa through illness, Kieran Trippier coming back into the squad and performing well meant the change was seamless.

Dubravka nearing Nick Pope’s clean sheet record

The 2022/23 campaign was a brilliant one for Pope who only conceded 32 goals in his 37 appearances.

He only missed Newcastle’s last game of the season once they knew Champions League qualification was secured but otherwise, it was a clean sweep for the England international.

During that season, Pope kept 10 consecutive clean sheets in all competitions including six in the Premier League.

Newcastle’s recent performances now mean Dubravka is only two games away from matching the impressive stat but remains a long way off Edwin van der Sar’s record of 14 in the 2008/09 season.

Dubravka will be keen to register another shutout as they travel to the capital to take on Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.
