Newcastle United could suddenly be set for heartbreak behind the scenes at St James’ Park on Valentine’s Day.
That is because Manchester United appear to be stepping up their interest in poaching Dan Ashworth from the Magpies.
It has been reported that Newcastle are seeking clarification about Ashworth’s stance, as the club begins to prepare for the possibility of him leaving to join the Red Devils.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe wants Ashworth to lead the Man United renaissance that he is funding, and it seems like the British billionaire might just get his wish.
Manchester United growing in confidence over Dan Ashworth
According to ESPN, Man United are now growing in confidence that they are going to hire Dan Ashworth. They state that the Red Devils are ‘closing in’ on the 52-year-old, with Newcastle fearing that the former FA chief’s mind is made up.
ESPN add that Ashworth will kick off the overhaul of Manchester United’s football operations, and that he will also have a say over other hires within the recruitment department.

Newcastle will need someone else to lead their project if Ashworth goes
It is sounding more and more likely that Newcastle United are going to lose Ashworth. That is a great shame, as he was considered a monumental appointment when he arrived on Tyneside in 2022.
Less than two years on and an exit appears to be on the cards, with Newcastle set to lose a hugely influential figure behind the scenes at St James’ Park.
Hiring Ashworth could be a huge moment for Man United, as they look to rebuild and re-establish themselves as a dominant force in English football. Funnily enough, that was what Ashworth was tasked to do at Newcastle.
Instead, the Magpies may now have to find someone else to take over, and the club have been doing their due diligence over possible replacements for months now.
