Newcastle United will welcome back three teams to the Premier League next season.

The Magpies kicked off the 2024/25 campaign with a home fixture against newly promoted Southampton in August. The game was full of controversy, but a first-half strike from Joelinton was enough to secure the three points.

Newcastle United have had a lot of success against the teams that were promoted back to the Premier League in 2024, with the Magpies winning every game they have played against them so far.

Eddie Howe’s side take on Ipswich Town on Saturday, where a win would make it a clean sweep against those three teams, having also beaten Leicester City home and away this season.

On Monday, it was confirmed that Leeds United and Burnley have been promoted to the Premier League, but there are still several teams who can take the final promotion spot.

Meanwhile, Newcastle are fighting for Champions League football after a historic Carabao Cup win, which ended an agonising wait for silverware.

With Newcastle’s cup win living long in the memory, one manager has namedropped the Magpies in an emphatic speech ahead of a huge run-in.

Chris Wilder mentions Newcastle United in play-off speech

Earlier this season, it looked like Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United were set for promotion after being relegated from the Premier League last season.

The Magpies had an aggregate score of 13-1 against the Blades last season, including the 8-0 thrashing at Bramall Lane.

After a run of four losses in their last five games, his side fell out of the top two and ultimately missed out on promotion.

Newcastle signed William Osula from Sheffield United last summer after the 21-year-old played at St James’ Park during a 5-1 thumping of Wilder’s side. Osula has since gone on to play his part in the Carabao Cup win and make a handful of Premier League appearances for the Magpies.

While Wilder may not have many fond memories of playing Newcastle, he still managed to name-drop them in an interview about Sheffield United’s play-off chances.

Speaking to the Star, Wilder said: “There’ll be a time to put that record (in the play-offs) to bed and hopefully the time is this season.

“As a perfect example, everyone thought Newcastle would get turned over in the Carabao Cup but they had a day and a night to remember.

“It will happen. Sheffield United will win the play-off semi-finals and will win the play-off final. And it’s about time that they did it.”

Chris Wilder once wanted the Newcastle United job

Wilder did an exceptional job with Sheffield United in his first season in the Premier League, nearly taking them to European qualification before they had to settle for just a top-half finish.

However, things went wrong for Wilder, who was sacked the following season due to poor results.

At one point, it was believed that Wilder wanted to be Newcastle manager, with Mike Ashley considering whether to sack Steve Bruce.

The move never materialised and Newcastle appointed Howe in 2021 instead, with Wilder going to Middlesbrough.

Wilder was sacked by Middlesbrough in 2022 and had a stint at Watford before eventually returning to Sheffield United in 2023.

Given his portfolio, many fans will see Wilder missing out on the Newcastle job as a major bullet dodged.
