Newcastle United’s Champions League hopes have taken a hit.

After five Premier League wins in a row, the Magpies came crashing back down to earth as Newcastle United lost to Aston Villa.

Jason Tindall’s side were easily beaten at Villa Park, with Alan Shearer calling it a ‘bad day at the office’ for Newcastle United.

That result allowed Aston Villa to close the gap on the Magpies, while Manchester City, Chelsea and Nottingham Forest all picked up victories too.

The latter won on Monday night, with Nuno Espirito Santo’s side beating Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 in North London to move back up to third in the Premier League table.

Jamie Carragher hails ‘huge’ result as Nottingham Forest leapfrog Newcastle United

Two former Newcastle United players gave Forest victory, with Elliot Anderson and Chris Wood getting the goals.

It was an important victory for Forest, who had lost their previous two games to lose ground in the race for Champions League qualification.

After a couple of disappointing results, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has admitted that the win over Spurs could be massive for Forest as they aim to finish above the likes of Newcastle United.

“It feels huge for Forest, not just the points and where it puts them in the table, but psychologically with what has happened in the last couple of weeks,” he said.

“They’ve had defeats and the opposition have been smelling blood in and around them. Other teams have been in great form in Aston Villa, Newcastle and Man City. That was a big result.”

Newcastle United will drop further down the Premier League

Due to this weekend’s results, Eddie Howe’s side have gone from third to fourth in the Premier League table.

Next up for Newcastle is Ipswich Town at St James’ Park on Saturday, and they will be even further down the table before they kick off.

That is because Manchester City and Aston Villa face each other on Tuesday night. There is no outcome that will not result in Newcastle dropping down to fifth.

If Pep Guardiola’s side win or draw, they will leapfrog the Magpies. If Aston Villa win, they will go from seventh to fourth in the league.

That will put pressure on Newcastle United to respond and pick up three points of their own against Ipswich Town on Saturday.

It is a game that the Magpies will be expected to win. Even a draw would move Newcastle back up to third, with Nottingham Forest, Manchester City and Aston Villa all in FA Cup semi-final action this weekend.
