3 reasons why Newcastle should avoid appointing Chris Wilder

Newcastle United would be an attractive proposition for Chris Wilder should Mike Ashley decided to hand Steve Bruce his papers. According to Chronicle Live, the ex-Sheffield United incumbent is closely monitoring the St James’ Park situation.

Wilder has been out of work since leaving Bramall Lane in March. He achieved great things with his boyhood club, leading them to the Premier League against the odds.

Things went pear-shaped though and he departed earlier this year, with the club on the cusp of relegation back to the Championship.

Now, it would appear that Wilder is keen to get back into football; with Newcastle a possible destination.

Following this morning’s reports, we take a look at three reasons why Wilder isn’t exactly tailor-made for the Newcastle position.

Boardroom problems

Wilder’s departure from Sheffield United came about after a disagreement with Blades owner Prince Abdullah. As a result, working alongside Mike Ashley might not be a match made in heaven.

The 54-year-old is a respectable man but will want things done on his terms. When it comes to signings, for example, the boss is unlikely to be happy with Ashley’s conservative approach.

Wilder may be desperate to get back into management but he should treat Newcastle with caution.

Recruitment

The former Blades boss is a tremendous man-manager but it’s fair to say his recruitment at Bramall Lane often left a lot to be desired.

Rhian Brewster was added for an astronomical sum, whilst Oliver McBurnie and Lys Mousset were also big-money additions.

His recruitment often left a lot to be desired and perhaps trusting him to get things right at Newcastle wouldn’t be overly wise.

Better options out there

Seemingly Wilder is linked with every job that comes up these days. The likelihood is that his agent is keen to get his client hooked up in the coming months.

Although he enjoyed one good campaign in the Premier League with the Blades, there’s no evidence that Wilder can do that on a consistent basis.

Eddie Howe still doesn’t have a job and along with nice football, he does have a reputation of overachieving over a prolonged period of time in the top-flight.

As a result, Newcastle perhaps shouldn’t be all guns blazing to appoint Wilder should Bruce get the chop.
