Newcastle United have suffered yet another injury blow, with Lewis Miley the latest player to be ruled out.

The international break started with news of Sven Botman being out for six to nine months with an ACL injury, and now Lewis Miley is set for a spell on the sidelines as well.

Fortunately, the 17-year-old’s injury is not as severe. It has been reported that he will be out of action for up to six weeks after sustaining a back injury whilst away with the England Under-20s.

Miley becomes the latest Newcastle player to be ruled out, during a season in which the Magpies have been crippled with injury problems.

And now the Telegraph’s Luke Edwards has provided an update on the teenager, explaining why he fears his season could now be over.

What Luke Edwards has heard about Lewis Miley and his back injury

After breaking the news about Miley, journalist Luke Edwards took to X to provide some more information on the situation.

He wrote on X: “From what I’m hearing I doubt we will see him again this season. He’s still growing and this is why coaching staff were worried about his workload. Winter injury crisis meant he had to play far more than anyone planned. He’ll be fine but the young man needs to rest I think.”

Newcastle’s midfield options for the rest of the season after injury blow

If what Edwards has heard is true then Eddie Howe will only have four centre midfielders to choose from for the rest of the season.

His starting trio will likely be Bruno Guimaraes, Joe Willock and Sean Longstaff, although the latter has been carrying an injury of his own for a long time and it continues to hinder him.

The one saving grace is that Elliot Anderson has returned from his back problem, and this international break should have given him the chance of regain his fitness. He is a player we will likely see a lot of between now and the end of the season.

And there is also hope that Joelinton could be back before the campaign comes to a close, although that is not guaranteed.

Sad end to a great first season for Lewis Miley

For Miley, it looks like it will be a disappointing end to his breakthrough season. He has had to play a lot of senior football at such a young age, and has already excelled in some really high profile games.

It is clear that he has a very bright future at St James’ Park, and this is only the beginning of what should be an incredible Newcastle United career.
