Lewis Miley’s great week continues after Newcastle home debut

Lewis Miley is being tipped to become a future star for Newcastle United, and the teenager is proving exactly why over the past few days.

The 16-year-old has been with the first team as Eddie Howe’s group prepares for the Premier League to return. They went to Riyadh in Saudi Arabia for a warm weather training camp, and Miley was one of five youth players called up.

He then got minutes off the bench in the 5-0 win over Al Hilal, helping Newcastle win the prestigious Diriyah Season Cup…which was just a friendly with a trophy at the end of it.

But the trip will have been a great experience for Miley, who was joined by youth teammates Dylan Stephenson, Jay Turner-Cooke, Joe White and Alex Murphy.

Then things got even better for Miley. He was named on the bench for the friendly at St James’ Park on Saturday, and came on for the final 10 minutes in place of Kieran Trippier.

The right-back had some words of encouragement for Miley as they swapped places, before Jacob Murphy dropped into defence to allow the youngster to play higher up the pitch. It was Miley’s first senior appearance at St James’ Park – a landmark moment for the local lad.

Two days later he was in the Under-21s’ starting lineup for the Premier League Cup clash with Crystal Palace. And what a game it was.

Miley was named in Elliott Dickman’s team to face Crystal Palace on Monday afternoon, and gave his side the lead in the first half.

However, it looked like Miley’s goal would be for nothing as the Eagles turned it around and led 2-1 going into stoppage time.

Then the drama occured.

Turner-Cooke, who is being linked with a loan move away from Newcastle, netted a dramatic equaliser, before something even more shocking happened.

With just seconds left on the clock, Miley scored his second goal of the game and Newcastle’s third, completing a remarkable stoppage time comeback to give his side victory.

At the age of 16, Miley is shining at Under-21 level whilst also benefitting from first team exposure. The future is incredibly bright for this young man, and it is going to be exciting to see what he can go on to achieve in a Newcastle shirt.
