Lewis Hall endured a tough first season at Newcastle United, but it was nothing compared to his teammate’s struggles.
The 19-year-old joined Newcastle United last summer on loan from Chelsea, with the deal set to become permanent for £28million a year later.
The deal was always expected to go through, but there were concerns from Toon fans when Lewis Hall‘s Newcastle career started with him barely getting a kick.
When he first arrived, Hall did not have the trust of Eddie Howe. He did not think that Hall was good enough defensively, which resulted in him spending most of his time on the bench.
But things eventually improved, and the left-back enjoyed a strong end to the season. Hall was one of Newcastle’s best players in the final few weeks, looking much more comfortable in black and white.
Sandro Tonali has had it much tougher than Lewis Hall
Hall recovered from his setbacks, and he is now hoping that Sandro Tonali can do the same.

The Italy international also signed for the Magpies last year, with his £55million arrival from AC Milan making him Newcastle’s second most expensive signing ever.
There was so much hype surrounding the Tonali transfer, but it changed to despair when the 24-year-old was banned for 10 months for betting.
Tonali is now nearing the end of that ban, and his current return fixture will be against Tottenham Hotspur on September 1st.
Hall excited to see Tonali play for Newcastle United again
In the meantime, Tonali is training hard to be ready for his comeback, and Lewis Hall has spoke to the Chronicle about his teammate’s efforts in pre-season.
“It’s been really difficult for Sandro,” he said.
“I talk about me and my setbacks, but it has been a lot harder for him.
“I know the extent of what he has had to deal with and he’s dealt with it quite well. He’s not just moved from the opposite end of the country, but a completely different country.
“It must not be easy for him at all, but he’s come back to pre-season and really worked hard and has got the quality that we all know he has. All the lads can’t wait for him to be back and helping the team.”
24/25 could be a bigger season for Newcastle’s 2023 summer signings
You just know that Tonali will be desperate to make up for lost time at Newcastle United. He has effectively lost a full year of his career, having not played since October 2023.
Since being suspended, all Tonali has been able to do is train. He has been learning and developing, building up to the day he is finally allowed to play again.
It is not too far away now, and Hall is excited to see him return after watching him excel in training.
But it will also be a big year for Hall, after he ended the previous campaign so strongly.
In fact, it could be a massive season for all of the players who Newcastle signed last summer. Harvey Barnes endured an injury hit first year, while Tino Livramento looks set to step up and take Kieran Trippier’s place in the starting XI amid claims that the 33-year-old is going to be sold.
There is so much more to come from all four players, but it is particularly exciting to see what Tonali can produce when he returns.
