Before Wednesday night, the thought of playing without Kieran Trippier was terrifying for Newcastle United fans.
Alongside Bruno Guimaraes, he is our most vital player and has been a transformative figure at St James’ Park.
But Kieran Trippier did not feature during the Carabao Cup contest with Manchester City, and it would be fair to say that his absence was not felt.
Tino Livramento took his place, on what was his first ever start for Newcastle United. It was quite the stage for the 20-year-old – up against last season’s treble winners, going one-on-one with Jack Grealish as part of a makeshift XI.
But Livramento rose to the challenge, and was outstanding on his full debut. He was described as ‘incredible‘ by Alexander Isak, while he was named the Player Of The Match as Newcastle advanced to the next round.
Fans were absolutely delighted with what they saw from Livramento, and it proved that Eddie Howe really can afford to rest Trippier at times this season. However, the England international was still able to have an influence on Wednesday night despite not playing.
Trippier helped Livramento during Newcastle’s win vs Man City
According to iNews, Trippier was actually coaching Livramento during Newcastle’s 1-0 win against Manchester City.
The 33-year-old was an unused substitute, but took time to help his teammate and give him advice during what was his first 90 minutes since his horrific injury back in 2022.
iNews note that Trippier helped Livramento deal with Grealish, who was incredibly poor at St James’ Park.
Trippier’s words of encouragement worked a treat, as Livramento was outstanding.
Moments like this sum up how important Trippier is to Newcastle. He is such a great leader and a team player. He is not selfish, nor does he see Livramento’s arrival as a threat. Instead, he wants to help the youngster grow and develop, because it is what Newcastle need.
