Kieran Trippier has admitted that Newcastle United teammate Callum Wilson mocks him every day because of his height.
It is fair to say that the 32-year-old is not the tallest of players. According to the Premier League’s official website, he’s only 5ft 10in. And apparently that’s short enough for Trippier to be on the receiving end of some ‘banter’ from the likes of Wilson.
The pair are currently on international duty, representing England at the World Cup in Qatar. Little man Trippier started the Three Lions’ opening game against Iran, and is expected to retain his place in the side to face USA tonight. As for Wilson, he will likely be on the bench again.
In preparation for the game, Trippier has appeared on England’s official YouTube channel, featuring on ‘Lions’ Den’ alongside host Josh Denzel.
As well as previewing the game against USA, he was also asked an important question by a special guest.
Wilson mocks Trippier
The guest in question was Wilson, who wanted Trippier to let him know why he is ‘so small but act so big’.
“I think it’s there to see for everyone, I’m not the tallest,” Trippier replied.
“I get it every day, I get it from the lads all the time!
“I don’t act so big, I feel like I am one of the oldest in the group so I try and help and help people around me, either at club level or international level.
“I’m not shocked by Cal saying that, why am I so small, he gives it me every day at club level. It’s a good relationship. I’ll give him it back, don’t worry about that.
“I get it from them every day, but Cal is one of those who has great banter and is great to have around the squad so I’m happy he’s here.”
Good job Trippier isn’t sensitive
Trippier recently said on the Under The Cosh podcast that Wilson has the ‘best banter’ at Newcastle, and it’s clear that the number nine likes to poke fun at the former Spurs man.
It’s a good job Trippier isn’t too sensitive – it seems like he can handle Wilson’s jokes!
But while Wilson might think Trippier acts big for a little man, it is merely down to the respect he commands.
The mood at Newcastle has changed ever since Trippier joined the club. He has raised standards at St James’ Park, and leads by example.
He clearly does that at international level too, and is a well respected member of Gareth Southgate’s squad. That’s why he was given the captain’s armband when Harry Kane went off against Iran on Monday.
As for Wilson, Trippier spoke about the presence he has behind the scenes. He seems like an infectious character who is always having fun, and that must be great for morale during training.
But he is a different beast on a pitch. Wilson’s got an edge to his game, and looks like he would be a nightmare to play against.
Hopefully he gets to showcase that ability even more at the World Cup alongside his club mate Trippier.
