Alan Shearer loves a goalscorer, and that’s why he loves Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson.
The 30-year-old has scored six Premier League goals this season, and his form for the Magpies has earned him a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the World Cup.
Wilson will now hope for the chance to show the world what he can do in Qatar, as he acts as Harry Kane’s deputy for the Three Lions.
It is an immense achievement for Wilson, who has worked so hard to receive international recognition. This is the first time he has got an England callup since 2019.
The £20million man is back now, and it is largely down to the goals he has scored in a black and white shirt. However, that isn’t the only positive to his game. And now Shearer has picked out why he thinks the Newcastle number nine is so special.
What Shearer loves about Wilson
Shearer has spoke to the Athletic about Wilson, and shared why he is such a big fan of him.
“I really like how he works defenders, irritates the life out of them and keeps them busy,” Shearer said.
“He never gets bullied. Callum has got an edge to him, a bit of nastiness and you need that.
“You need that bit of arrogance, that bit of strut and belief in yourself, because if you don’t look after yourself, who is going to look after you? Nobody. I like that about him, I like that he riles defenders. It’s part of his game.”
Wilson must be awful to play against
As well as his goals, Wilson leads the line brilliantly. He is an absolute nightmare for defenders.
The forward will run in behind with his pace, but is equally as happy to use his strength and play with his back to goal. And you can guarantee that he is going to clash with the opposition’s centre-back at some point during a game. We saw it recently against Manchester United when Wilson was involved in a battle with Lisandro Martinez.
You would probably hate him if he played against you, but he’s ours so all of these nasty habits make him even more adored.
Shearer knows all about leading the line and being physical, or simply just being a nightmare for defenders. And he loves that quality in Wilson.
It isn’t all about goals for him. The former Bournemouth man brings so much to Eddie Howe’s team, and his attitude is a big part of who he is as a player.
Wilson’s arrogance and nastiness is a key reason for his success, and it’s got him flying for Newcastle and competing at the World Cup. Long may it continue.
