Kieran Trippier shares who has the best banter in Newcastle United dressing room

Dressing room camaraderie or ‘banter’ is important at a football club, and Newcastle United are no different. And Kieran Trippier has named who the best joker is at St James’ Park right now.

The 32-year-old has appeared on the Under The Cosh podcast, looking through his career from Manchester City all the way to Newcastle.

There were tales of fighting with Ross Wallace at Burnley, and receiving one-to-one defensive training from Diego Simeone.

And when the topic of conversation turned to Newcastle, the hosts wanted to know who has the ‘best crack’ in Eddie Howe’s dressing room.

Trippier was quick to give one answer, but also provided an alternative.

Two players competing for ‘best banter’ at Newcastle

Speaking on Under The Cosh, Trippier revealed that a new signing at Newcastle has the ‘best crack’ in the dressing room.

“I’d say Popey, he’s very sharp,” Trippier said.

“When you come for him with banter, he’s got something off the top of his head. He’ll hit you back straight away.

“Definitely Popey, or Callum Wilson. He’s got good banter as well. But a great group of lads.”

Trippier is in fine company for the World Cup then

Funnily enough, the two players Trippier named are the pair that are joining him in Qatar. Nick Pope and Callum Wilson have also been selected for the England squad, and are heading to the middle east today.

Camaraderie will be even more important in the England camp, as they are set to spend a full month together without any distractions.

Morale will need to be high, which is why it is vital to have good characters as well as good footballers. And in Pope and Wilson, Gareth Southgate has got both.

Given the way he jokes on with Michail Antonio on his podcast, it’s no surprise to hear Trippier name Wilson as someone with ‘good banter’. However, it’s perhaps a surprise to see Pope come out on top.

Maybe it’s because he’s had so much time to work on his jokes due to not being very busy in the Newcastle goal. Pope has had an excellent start to life at St James’ Park, but his job has been made a lot easier by the defenders in front of him.
