Kieran Trippier deal proves Newcastle new owners are getting it so right

Signing Kieran Trippier is the perfect start to January for the new Newcastle United owners.

Ever since the takeover went through in October, there has been a sense of anticipation for the January transfer window. At times it was desperation.

While the new owners brought the buzz back, they haven’t been able to influence things massively beyond changing the manager.

Their time to shine was always going to be the January transfer window, and fans were inundated with rumours galore as soon as the £305million deal was signed off.

Realistic names, big names, strange names, former names – a plethora of players have been linked with the Magpies, giving no clear indication on the kind of signings we would possibly make.

But the first deal has came quickly, and the Trippier signing says a lot about the direction Amanda Staveley and co are taking the club in.

When the takeover went through, the media went into overdrive over talk of Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland. Realistically, Toon fans were just buzzing to see the windows get a wash at St James’ Park.

With their incredible wealth, PIF can sign anyone they want – providing the player wants to come. And I’m sure some superstar names would come if there was enough money on the table.

But Staveley and co have taken a different approach whilst remaining ambitious.

Without the takeover, there’s no way we could sign Kieran Trippier. He’s an England international coming from a Champions League side. In contrast, we couldn’t afford to loan Hamza Choudhury in the summer.

Bringing in the 31-year-old is a real statement of intent, without being too Hollywood. It’s far from Robinho to Manchester City.

But it’s a big enough deal to make you stand up and think ‘wow, these guys really mean business’.

Trippier is a sensible addition. He’s a top class player who immediately improves the side, and he has stacks of experience which can only help his new Newcastle teammates.

And as we’ve already stated, he is still ambitious. His arrival will no doubt inspire other sizeable names to join the Magpies.

Staveley and co have got January off to the perfect start, and shown us the direction they’re taking Newcastle in. The only way is up, but it will be a steady progression. This is a process, not the Harlem Globetrotters. And thank goodness.
