Agbonlahor will be devastated if Eriksen swaps Brentford for Newcastle

In November last year, Gabby Agbonlahor claimed players would rather join Brentford than Newcastle.

Fast forward to April 2022, and there is speculation that Christian Eriksen could leave the Bees and head to St James’ Park.

The midfielder’s contract expires this summer, and the Northern Echo claim Newcastle are ‘hopeful’ of signing the 30-year-old.

The report states that the Magpies are willing to increase Eriksen’s wages, and will match or better any other offer he receives.

He would be a wonderful signing for Newcastle, proving he’s still got it at Brentford following his emotional return to football.

A move to St James’ Park would delight the Toon Army, and make the former Villa forward Agbonlahor look rather stupid.

Ahead of the January transfer window, all the talk from pundits was that no one would want to join Newcastle because of their position in the table. Eventually that was disproven, with genuine stars moving to the North East.

In November, Agbonlahor pontificated on TalkSPORT that people would rather live in London and play for less money than move to Newcastle.

“If you offered now, a player, £40,000-a-week at Newcastle, or £30,000-a-week at Brentford, he would go to Brentford – even on less money,” he said.

“Players don’t want to live in Newcastle, let’s be honest.”

While Agbonlahor may have thought he was being honest, he was actually just wrong. Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood, Bruno Guimaraes, Matt Targett and Dan Burn proved that people do want to live in Newcastle.

And now Eriksen could follow them. Newcastle will reportedly offer Eriksen a pay rise, although by Agbonlahor’s logic that won’t be enough to convince him to move to Tyneside.

If Eriksen does join the Magpies, Agbonlahor can be sure to expect a lot of flack from Toon fans.
