Former Newcastle United player Jonjo Shelvey is back in England.

The midfielder has been in Turkey since September 2023 after a failed spell at Nottingham Forest, and now Jonjo Shelvey has returned to the English Football League.

Newcastle United’s old number eight has signed for Burnley in the Championship, after being released by Eyüpspor earlier this month.

Shelvey joins Scott Parker’s side, who are challenging for an immediate return to the Premier League. They were relegated under Vincent Kompany last season, with Eddie Howe’s side beating them home and away.

Jonjo Shelvey’s Newcastle admission after Burnley transfer

Parker will hope that the arrival of Shelvey boosts his promotion bid, as the 32-year-old prepares to play in England for the first time since a very disappointing six months at Nottingham Forest.

That came after he left Newcastle United in January 2023. However, while Shelvey left Newcastle, his family did not.

During an interview with Burnley’s official YouTube channel, Shelvey spoke about how the weather in Burnley is very different to Turkey.

“It’s a lot different to Turkey,” he said.

“But I’m pretty much used to the coldness. My family still live up in Newcastle. It’s cold up there as well. You just get used to it.”

Jonjo Shelvey now teammates with Newcastle United transfer target

It is interesting to hear that Shelvey’s family still live in the North East.

He spent seven years at St James’ Park, and the region clearly had a positive impact on him and his loved ones.

But now Turf Moor is his home, as Shelvey aims to make his mark in a Burnley shirt.

He will be playing alongside James Trafford, who has been heavily linked with a move to Newcastle United.

It is claimed that Trafford wants to join Newcastle, having missed out on a move during the summer.

Trafford’s recent performance against Sunderland certainly caught the attention of Toon fans, as they revelled in the goalkeeper making two penalty saves to deny Wilson Isidor.

With a January deal unlikely, it will be interesting to see if the Magpies target Trafford once again in the summer. Between now and then, hopefully Shelvey can have a word with 22-year-old to reaffirm his desire to join Eddie Howe’s side.
