A stunning goal from Bruno Guimarares gave Newcastle United victory against Southampton, and Jonjo Shelvey has hailed the ‘outstanding’ Brazilian.

With Joelinton not included, Bruno was handed his first Newcastle start at St Mary’s. He joined Shelvey in the middle of the park, with Joe Willock playing in a slightly advanced role.

It was a big night for Bruno. He’d been forced to wait a long time for his first start in a Newcastle shirt. But he didn’t disappoint.

There was the odd slack pass, but he was always keen to get on the ball and dominate proceedings. It was a real taste of what’s to come.

But his big moment came early in the second half. Matt Targett’s corner was headed down by Dan Burn and into the path of Bruno. The 24-year-old did something truly outrageous, pulling out a back heel volley to put Newcastle in front.

The Toon Army went wild, and so did the players. It was an incredible goal – a moment of magic from our newest Samba star.

After the game, Shelvey spoke to NUFC TV, and was asked about his new midfielder partner Bruno.

“He was brilliant tonight,” Shelvey told NUFC TV.

“He got on the ball, got us playing – he was outstanding.

“Obviously topped it off with a great finish, I mean I don’t think I could probably get my leg that high. But he’s got that Brazilian bit of magic and luckily it was the one that got us the three points.”

While Shelvey might not think he could score Bruno’s goal, he certainly played a key role in the victory as well. It was the stand-in skipper’s cross that Chris Wood headed home to drag us level.

It was a good performance from Shelvey, and it’s exciting to see what he can achieve alongside Bruno. The pair are wonderful passers of the ball, and could become an exciting duo under Eddie Howe.

Now attentions will turn to Chelsea, where Howe has a big decision to make regarding his midfield. Joelinton could be back, which poses some difficult questions for the Toon boss. Then again, it’s not a bad problem to have.
