Dubravka heroic, Bruno magic: Newcastle player ratings vs Southampton

Newcastle United are now 10 points clear of the relegation zone thanks to an incredible 2-1 win against Southampton.

The Magpies came from behind to make it three wins in a row and stretch our unbeaten run to nine games.

There were plenty of big performances from Eddie Howe’s players, and here are our player ratings from a memorable night on the south coast.

Martin Dubravka – 9/10

The Newcastle number one could do nothing to prevent Southampton’s opener, but did plenty to ensure Newcastle won the game. Dubravka made some stunning saves and collected crosses to relieve the pressure. Possibly his best performance of the season.

Emil Krafth – 6/10

Krafth retained his place in the starting XI for the fourth game in a row, but struggled in the first half. Most of Southampton’s attacks came down his side. The Swede did well enough though overall.

Fabian Schar – 8/10

Another solid performance from the 30-year-old, who continues his fine form under Eddie Howe.

Dan Burn – 9/10

What a signing this man has been. A cruel deflection off Burn gave Southampton the lead, but it was the only bad moment on a colossal night for the local hero.

Matt Targett – 7/10

A typical Matt Targett performance, which can only be a good thing. He nearly opened his Toon account, but was denied by a goal line clearance.

Jacob Murphy – 5/10

Not a great night for Jacob Murphy. The winger picked up an early booking and was often wasteful in possession. He got into some great positions, but ultimately didn’t deliver.

Jonjo Shelvey – 7/10

The captain had some sloppy moments in the first half, but it was his glorious cross that helped Newcastle equalise. The second half was all about his defensive work, which Shelvey did brilliantly.

Bruno Guimaraes – 8/10

What a goal. And what a way to mark your first start for the club. Bruno’s goal was simply stunning on a night he’ll never forget. The Brazilian produced some wonderful passes, but gave possession away more than he would’ve liked. But scoring the winner in such exceptional fashion earns him an eight.

Ryan Fraser – 7/10

Another tireless performance from Ryan Fraser. The lad just doesn’t stop running. The wide man wasn’t much of an attacking threat, but his work off the ball was once again tremendous.

Joe Willock – 9/10

Willock played higher up the pitch to support Chris Wood, and it was a tactical decision that worked a treat. Just like Fraser, Willock was wonderful out of possession, leading the press and causing Southampton to make mistakes. His block late in the game summed up his performance.

Chris Wood – 8/10

Finally he’s got his goal. The 30-year-old took it brilliantly, latching onto a fantastic Shelvey cross with his head. It was a typical Chris Wood goal, and hopefully the first of many for Newcastle.
