Joelinton makes remarkable admission about what positions he can play in

Joelinton is incredibly versatile for Newcastle United, but there is one position he does not think he can play in.

Eddie Howe relies heavily on Joelinton‘s flexibility, using him in multiple different roles throughout what is proving to be a brilliant season for Newcastle.

The 26-year-old has primarily played in the middle of the park, but we have also seen him operate on the left of attack. It has resulted in the £40million man having his most prolific season in a Toon shirt, scoring seven goals and providing three assists. His latest strike came during a sensational performance against Tottenham, as the Magpies recorded a statement win.

Wherever he plays, Joelinton does a job. We have even seen him play as a number six when Bruno Guimaraes has not been available.

Bruno is really impressed with his friend’s versatility, and has listed all of the positions that he can play incredibly well in. However, Joelinton does not fully agree with the Brazil international.

Ahead of the game against Everton, Joelinton and Bruno spoke to beIN Sport. They were asked about possibly playing for Brazil together in the future.

Joelinton replied: “I hope so.”

Bruno added: “I would like to. I think he deserves it. I think he’s in the best moment of his career. Happy for him, happy for what he is doing for the club. He can play midfield, winger, number nine so…”

Joelinton then laughed, amused by the thought of being a striker.

“Not nine, no,” he said.

Number nine no more for Newcastle

It is quite an incredible response from Joelinton, considering he was signed as a striker. He arrived for a club record fee and was given the number nine shirt, but it quickly transpired that he was not suited to the role.

While he has shown his worth now, playing Joelinton as a striker would still be seen as a blunder. It is not something Howe has done often. I can recall it happening away to Norwich last season, but the Toon boss quickly changed that when it was not working. Joelinton then scored twice after moving to the left wing.

Mike Ashley forked out a huge amount of cash for him, and Steve Bruce persevered. Now Joelinton is laughing at the thought of being a ‘number nine’.

It is absolutely staggering to hear Joelinton say this, but at least we can laugh about it now!
