‘Jealous’: Jake Humphrey jumps to the defence of Newcastle fans after criticism

Newcastle United supporters enjoyed themselves on Saturday night, even if their team gave them nothing to shout about at the Amex Stadium.

The Magpies were beaten 3-1 by Brighton And Hove Albion at the weekend, meaning Eddie Howe’s side have now lost three games in a row for the first time under his management.

It was a really poor performance from Newcastle, with Alan Shearer believing that Callum Wilson was the only player who deserved any credit. He came off the bench to score in stoppage time, but it was too little too late as the Magpies slumped to another defeat.

But as the game wound down and the Newcastle players accepted defeat, the fans made sure they made the most of their trip to the opposite end of the country.

Newcastle fans praised by Jake Humphrey despite heavy defeat

Former BT Sport presenter Jake Humphrey has shared a clip of the Newcastle fans from Saturday. They are in full voice in the 88th minute, when their team are losing 3-0 and playing terribly. But the Toon fans are not deterred, and continue to cheer the side on.

This impressed Humphrey, whose message then led to criticism of the Toon Army from some of his followers. However, the 44-year-old then made sure to hit back at those who were having a pop at the travelling Newcastle fans.

He wrote on Twitter: “Amazing number of fans offering some odd criticism of Newcastle fans for this display of loyalty. Don’t be jealous, just be better.”

While there is an internal debate at Newcastle about the way away tickets are being distributed, those who made the journey did the club proud, as they always do.

The Toon support is always fantastic, even in defeat. Fair play to those fans who just wanted to enjoy themselves. Sure, the result and performance was terrible, but the travelling fans might as well laugh it off and have a sing song. It’s only football at the end of the day.

No doubt there will be similar scenes in Paris, Milan and Dortmund later this year, when there is every chance that Newcastle United could be on the end of a similar result. That won’t deter Toon fans, who continue to enjoy the ride.
