Newcastle United welcomed Anthony Gordon back from injury for their win over Manchester United.

The Magpies breezed past Ruben Amorim’s side on Sunday, with Newcastle beating Man United 4-1 at St James’ Park.

It was a comfortable afternoon for a Newcastle United side that did not have Eddie Howe on the touchline due to illness.

With Howe unavailable, Jason Tindall took centre stage, and he was able to welcome Anthony Gordon back into the fold. The 24-year-old had not played since the FA Cup exit to Brighton due to suspension and injury, but was fit enough to be on the bench.

Gordon was introduced in the 78th minute, coming on for Jacob Murphy. At that point, the game was won. Newcastle were 4-1 up, with Bruno Guimaraes putting the result beyond doubt just moments before Gordon came on.

Bruno Guimaraes’ message to Anthony Gordon after beating Manchester United

It was an outstanding performance from the Magpies, and having Gordon back from injury is the icing on the cake.

While Newcastle have coped during his absence, having Gordon fit and available again gives Howe much more depth in attack.

Following the victory, Gordon took to his official Instagram account to send a message to supporters.

He wrote: “Good to be back with the boys.”

His message received a reply from Toon captain Bruno Guimaraes, who responded: “Nice to have u back bro.”

The problem for Anthony Gordon at Newcastle United right now

Newcastle United have welcomed back one of their best players in Anthony Gordon.

However, the England international is actually in a difficult position upon his Toon return.

For the first time since the beginning of the 2023/24 campaign, Gordon is not a guaranteed starter at St James’ Park.

Right now, it is difficult to argue why Gordon should be reinstated into the starting XI. In his absence, Harvey Barnes has been incredible. That trend continued on Sunday, with Barnes scoring two goals.

While Gordon is also capable of playing on the right, Newcastle currently have Jacob Murphy in red hot form on that side of the pitch. He got another goal contribution at the weekend, with Murphy setting up Barnes’ first to get his 10th Premier League assist of the season.

Only Mohamed Salah has got more Premier League assists than Murphy this season.

Given how well Barnes and Murphy are playing, Gordon may have to continue settling for a place on the Newcastle United bench for the time being.
