Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe could be excused for being a little distracted right now.
The Magpies have flown to Germany for a pre-season training camp, with Eddie Howe putting his players through their paces at Adidas HQ.
But not all of his Newcastle United players are there. Some are receiving an extended break after competing at either the Euros or the Copa America.
That includes Kieran Trippier and Anthony Gordon, who were part of the England squad that lost the Euro 2024 final to Spain.
Eddie Howe linked with the England job
And it is that defeat that could have a major impact on Eddie Howe.
It has now been confirmed that Gareth Southgate will leave his post as England manager, and Eddie Howe is one of the top candidates to replace him.

That was always Newcastle’s fear when England lost the Euros final, and now Toon officials could be bracing themselves for an approach from the FA.
The Toon Army will hope that Howe stays. He has had a transformative impact at St James’ Park, and there is still so much more that he can achieve.
But the chance to manage your country does not come around often, and it might be an opportunity that Howe feels he has to take – if it is offered to him, of course.
How Eddie Howe currently feels about his future
According to the Daily Mail, Howe is currently ‘relaxed’ about his future amid speculation that the FA could try and poach him from Newcastle United.
They state that he is focussed on preparing for the new season, having arrived in Germany with the rest of his staff and players.
But while Howe is calm about his future, there is a release clause in his contract that the FA could activate and give him a decision to make.
The Daily Mail report that Howe’s release clause is £5million. They add that it was £8million, but it has now decreased after the Magpies failed to qualify for the Champions League.
Newcastle’s shortcomings could make Howe a more affordable option for the FA, but it remains to be seen how enthusiastic the 46-year-old would be about replacing Southgate.
Newcastle would get less for Howe than they did for Dan Ashworth
Considering how important Howe is to Newcastle, it is mad to think that he could leave for half the amount that Dan Ashworth did.
He is now Manchester United’s sporting director, after they agreed to pay Newcastle £10million in compensation.
That has resulted in Paul Mitchell arriving as his replacement, and it will be interesting to see what role he plays in Howe’s future. They are unlikely to have struck up a relationship yet, as Mitchell has only been with the club for a few weeks.
Following his arrival, there have also been the departures of Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi. That may also influence Howe’s thinking, as they were close allies.
