Newcastle United are still bouncing from the 2-0 win over Manchester United on Sunday, and now Jacob Murphy has shared that he could tell early on in the game that they had the game in the bag.

Jacob Murphy is finally starting to become the player the Newcastle staff have always said he can be. He had another outstanding game down the right flank for Newcastle on Sunday as Eddie Howe has trusted him to cover for the injured Miguel Almiron.

Now, speaking on the Rio Ferdinand Presents FIVE podcast, Murphy was asked by Ferdinand at what point does he smell the victory in the air, with Muphy saying: “Usually from when we start our press off from their first goal kick or whatever; their first goal kick [David] De Gea was taking a while. I thought ‘hmm this is a bit unusual for them, they usually start playing out quick.’

Murphy is starting to become another key figure for Newcastle

“He was taking his time with it and he ended up then asking everyone to go up field and he kicked it long. So I thought I’ll see how the next one goes. And they were just taking a while, loads of people pointing so I thought yeah, I could sense from that that we were going to have a good game from there.”

Jacob’s Murphy-Sense was spot on as Newcastle went on to dominate the game registering 22 shots on goal to Man United‘s six. Man United left-back Luke Shaw came out after the game and said that Newcastle wanted it more and won the game through determination rather than quality. While he’s partially right, the quality was there too.

Newcastle’s players had plenty of motivation to beat Man United

Murphy went on to talk about the motivation they had going into the game with the cup final defeat and the comments regarding Newcastle’s play style firing them up. When Rio asked what he meant about the comments, Murphy said: “Stuff about us being time-wasters and being annoying to play against. And yeah, we are annoying to play against we’re full throttle, we’re a high-intensity team so in that sense yeah, we are annoying to play against. But time wasting and things like that, that didn’t sit right with me and some of the boys in the team because that’s not what we do.”

In another quality Murphy moment, the winger was seen making a funny gesture to Newcastle’s media team when he came off the pitch, pointing at his wrist and pulling a face then later taking to Instagram to give Anthony Gordon a superb new nickname. Never a dull moment with Murphy around.
