Luke Shaw was stunned after Newcastle’s demolition yesterday

Luke Shaw did not hold back with his thoughts after Newcastle United demolished Manchester United at St James’ Park yesterday. The 2-0 score line actually flattered Manchester United in the end.

In what started off as a baffling interview with Sky Sports, Shaw started off by saying that Newcastle‘s win wasn’t down to quality – it was. Newcastle were better than Manchester United in every single area of the pitch.

However, what the £30million former Southampton man was getting at was that Newcastle simply wanted it more and that’s what made the difference: “I don’t think [Newcastle] won the game on quality today,” Shaw told Sky Sports. “I think they won it on passion, hunger, desire, and attitude.

‘They wanted it more’ – Luke Shaw tears into his own team

“They clearly had higher motivation than we did, and that can’t be possible. It’s not acceptable.

“We know it was a massive game today and they wanted it more. At Manchester United, that cannot be possible.”

“It’s an extremely tough place to come and if we don’t have that [passion and hunger] we’re going to suffer, it was obvious on the pitch.”

“We didn’t create too much, and I think you can say it’s been coming since before the international break, we dropped levels and it was clear to see today.”

“The players had a chat in the changing room after with no staff around, because ultimately it’s down to us players on the pitch.

“It was nowhere near good enough and we had to speak. We have to speak out in front of each other.”

It wasn’t just a win, it was a demolition by Newcastle

As a Newcastle fan you can almost taste those delicious salty tears. Shaw was clearly not a happy bunny and who can blame him? Man United were outclassed yesterday. Newcastle should be the ones disappointed as they could have bettered Liverpool’s antics from a few weeks ago when they put seven past the Red Devils.

Eddie Howe‘s boys had a whopping 22 shots on goal compared to Man United’s six. David De Gea made some fantastic saves to keep the score down but was helped by some poor shooting in the first half from Joe Willock and Sean Longstaff.

If there was ever a doubt whether or not Newcastle could hold on to one of those top four spots until the end of the season this was a huge statement to the rest of the league – we’re up for this fight and we’ll be there come May.
