Manchester United have completed the signing of Bryan Mbeumo for £71million, but they are far from pleased after Brentford made a Newcastle United plea to the winger.

After lots of speculation over whether a deal would be done, Bryan Mbeumo has officially signed for Manchester United.

The 25-year-old was linked with a move to Newcastle United, with talks reportedly taking place in June. However, the deal was quickly ended when Mbeumo’s wage demands were deemed too high.

Mbeumo revealed he wants to challenge for trophies at Man United, but he will surely be in it for the long haul if he wants to win anything with the Red Devils.

Newcastle were very eager to sign Mbeumo, with the Cameroon international performing well anytime he came up against Eddie Howe’s side. Reports suggested Mbeumo was Howe’s ‘dream signing’, but his ambitions were not to be. Newcastle have signed Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest, so Howe has been able to get the right-winger he was so desperate for.

However, things could have been completely different after Brentford made a huge demand to Mbeumo before completing his Man United move.

Brentford wanted Bryan Mbeumo to reject Man United for Newcastle

Mbeumo was no stranger to success against the Magpies. He scored twice and bagged an assist across their two Premier League meetings last season, so it was clear to see why Howe was so eager to sign him.

Instead, Newcastle will have to come up against Mbeumo for a different Premier League team next season. At one point, it looked like Mbeumo could have stayed at Brentford, with the deal with Man United stalling.

Now the deal is finally done, journalist Rob Dawson has stated that Man United are actually unhappy with the way negotiations went down with Brentford. The Bees put their valuation of the player as high as £77million at one point, before settling on the £71million they are receiving.

Additionally, there is a belief that Brentford wanted Mbeumo to reject the Man United move in favour of Tottenham Hotspur or Newcastle. It is fair to say the two parties may not be working together for another deal anytime soon.

Are Newcastle United better off without Bryan Mbeumo?

While the deal ultimately failed to happen, it was clear that Mbeumo was Newcastle’s top target at right-wing. The 25-year-old was coming off a brilliant season with Brentford, registering 27 goal contributions in the Premier League.

With his pace and eye for goal, Mbeumo would have been a great fit for Newcastle if they had been able to get a deal done. Still, Newcastle will be fine with Elanga, a player who has natural chemistry with Alexander Isak.

The 23-year-old has cost a good amount less than Mbeumo as well, but it remains to be seen who will have the better season. Mbeumo will have to work hard with his new team to get them back into Europe after missing out due to their low Premier League position and Europa League final loss.

As for Elanga, he will have the benefit of playing Champions League football at Newcastle, a competition he previously played in with Man United.
