Isaac Hayden is Newcastle United’s forgotten man.

Fans would be excused for forgetting that Isaac Hayden is still a Newcastle United player. The midfielder has not played for Eddie Howe’s side since December 2021, with his last senior appearance coming in a 4-0 defeat to Manchester City.

Since then, Hayden has had loan spells at Norwich City, Standard Liege and QPR. It has been very clear that he has not future at Newcastle United, despite having a contract at St James’ Park until 2026.

Another summer exit was on the cards, with Hayden told he could leave Newcastle on loan yet again. Geordie Boot Boys were told that Hayden could go to Belgium or Turkey, but a move did not materialise.

The transfer window closed with Hayden still at Newcastle United, which had to be seen as a major blow for the 29-year-old.

Isaac Hayden plays for Newcastle United Under-21s

With no loan move forthcoming, it was unclear how Hayden would actually get to play any football between now and January.

However, an opportunity emerged on Tuesday night.

While Newcastle beat Wimbledon 1-0 in the Carabao Cup, the Under-21s were also in action. Diarmuid O’Carroll’s side took on Halifax Town in the National League Cup, coming from behind to win 2-1.

There was a surprise name in the starting lineup, with Hayden wearing the famous black and white stripes for the first time in years.

He started in midfield, and played 60 minutes before being replaced by Anthony Munda. The likes of Alfie Harrison, Cathal Heffernan and Leo Shahar also started, while there was an appearance off the bench from the highly rated Trevan Sanusi.

Hayden can be a great influence on Newcastle youngsters

Hayden’s experience could be invaluable to the youngsters who are trying to rise through the ranks on Tyneside.

He has always been a great professional, and he is a player who the Newcastle youth side can look to and try to emulate.

In turn, playing for the Under-21s will allow Hayden to maintain his sharpness before hopefully securing a loan move away during the January transfer window.
