Injury could cost Federico Fernandez the chance to save his Newcastle career

Injury has ruled Newcastle defender Federico Fernandez out of action for the next few games.

Eddie Howe confirmed the news on Wednesday morning, speaking to the press ahead of the Magpies’ trip to Liverpool.

“We’ve lost Federico Fernández through injury,” Howe said.

“We’re not sure of the extent, but he’ll miss this game and the majority over the festive period.”

It’s a big blow for Newcastle, who need all the help they can get going into the busiest period of the season. Fans are devastated, as they’ve been wanting to see more of Fernandez.

The 32-year-old hasn’t started under Howe, reduced to two substitute appearances. One of those came against Norwich, where Fernandez was sensational.

But it didn’t earn him a start against Burnley, and it has since been claimed that he might not be a Newcastle player for much longer.

Newcastle World recently reported that the Magpies could look to sell Fernandez during the January transfer window.

Injury comes at the worst possible time for Federico Fernandez

The defender would have been hoping to feature in the coming weeks. Newcastle’s backline isn’t performing well, and Fernandez certainly could have added a bit more class to proceedings.

But that won’t happen. And it could cost him his Newcastle career.

A string of decent performances over the Christmas period could have preserved Fernandez’s future at St James’ Park. But now he won’t get the chance to prove his worth to Howe.

That increases the possibility of him being moved on in January in favour of new arrivals. It’ll be a blow for the Argentinian, who has been a fantastic player for the Magpies.

He was an excellent £6million signing by Rafa Benitez, and a player who should have been playing more this season. But he was dropped by Graeme Jones following Steve Bruce’s departure, and things haven’t really improved under Howe.

Hopefully Fernandez comes back from injury quickly and gets the chance to prove he should be retained by the new Newcastle United. However, the early diagnosis isn’t looking good.
