Fernandez shines off the bench: Newcastle player ratings vs Norwich

Newcastle United drew their must-win game with Norwich on Tuesday night.

The Magpies remain rock bottom of the Premier League, making it 14 games without a win.

But who was impressive in black and white, and who struggled? Here are our player ratings from Newcastle’s 1-1 draw with Norwich…

Martin Dubravka – 7/10

The Slovakian made some decent saves throughout the evening, and was the hero late on. Dubravka spared Fabian Schar’s blushes to secure a point by denying Pierre Lees-Melou in stoppage time.

Javi Manquillo – 6/10

A solid performance from Javi Manquillo, who started for the first time under Eddie Howe.

Limited opportunities to get forward, and coped with the threat from Norwich’s left.

Fabian Schar – 6/10

He was nearly the villain after an error nearly gifted Norwich a late winner. Other than that, it was a decent showing from Schar, who tried his best to bring the ball out of defence.

Ciaran Clark – 0/10

Jamal Lewis – 6/10

Considering the circumstances, this was a good return for Jamal Lewis.

It was his first Premier League start since February, and he should be happy with how it went. However, he wasn’t too troubled by Norwich’s Josh Sargent.

Ryan Fraser – N/A

Not on long enough to get a rating. Sacrificed after Ciaran Clark’s moment of madness.

Joe Willock – 4/10

The £25million man looked really off the pace against the Canaries. Won a few tackles, but was often ponderous in possession.

Jonjo Shelvey – 6/10

Tried his best to get Newcastle going on the counterattack, and added some bite when needed in the middle.

Allan Saint-Maximin – 5/10

Another player stifled by the red card. Being reduced to 10 men saw Saint-Maximin change position and go up front, and he did try and get Newcastle up the pitch as best he could.

However, not his most productive evening in black and white. Perhaps things would have been different if it remained 11 on 11.

Joelinton – 7/10

Yet another impressive performance from Joelinton. The Brazilian was disciplined after Clark’s red, and protected Manquillo brilliantly.

We didn’t see a lot of him offensively, although he did blaze a couple of efforts high into the Leazes end.

Callum Wilson – 7/10

The captain on the night, and the man to give Newcastle the lead from the spot…just. It wasn’t a vintage penalty, but it went in and that’s all that matters.

Federico Fernandez – 8/10

Newcastle’s best player on the night, and an exceptional return after so long out of the team.

Isaac Hayden – 5/10

Nearly doubled Newcastle’s lead shortly after coming on, but that was as good as it got for Hayden. The midfielder did nothing to suggest he should be starting with his cameo against Norwich.

Miguel Almiron – N/A

Not on long enough to be graded, but lively as always.
