Ian Wright says Newcastle’s Eddie Howe is making life difficult for one manager he now feels sorry for

Eddie Howe is adored at Newcastle United but there has been a lot of speculation about his future at the club.

Ever since Eddie Howe‘s appointment as manager in 2021, Newcastle have been on an upward trajectory.

He steered Newcastle clear of relegation and then led the Magpies to the Champions League after finishing fourth in the Premier League.

There was a slight blip last season due to an unprecedented injury crisis but Howe is expected to get Newcastle back into Europe this season.

However, there have been severe growing pains at Newcastle with Howe falling out with sporting director Paul Mitchell over the summer.

There is also tension around Howe being linked to the England job after Gareth Southgate stepped down following Euro 2024.

After Southgate’s resignation, Howe immediately emerged as one of the obvious contenders to replace him. The FA identified him as a top target and it has created a worrying uncertainty around his future at Newcastle.

Newcastle’s owners are confident they can keep Howe, but the tension caused by a disappointing summer transfer window has certainly not helped.

Speaking on The Overlap, Ian Wright hinted that the FA are still monitoring Howe, which has made life very difficult for interim England manager Lee Carsley.

“I feel for Carsley in this instance, as this is happening around his interim.

“So he has those games to focus on getting the job full time but the FA know that Eddie is there, so this kind of skews it up and messes it up for him a bit for me.

Eddie Howe’s future must be sorted soon

There has been far too much noise off the pitch around Newcastle this season, and it seems it is having an effect on their results.

The fallout between Howe and Mitchell has been hogging headlines and dominating questions in press conferences and it is an unnecessary distraction for all involved.

Then there is Howe’s links to the England job and concerns he could leave the club. On top of that, there is speculation over the likes of Anthony Gordon who is in talks over a new contract.

Newcastle – and Howe – could both do with putting an end to the rumours and making a decision one way or another. If he is eager to depart for England then Newcastle need adequate time to source a top-tier replacement.
