‘I think’: Isak has just provided an update on his fitness after he was forced off vs Man City

Alexander Isak was Newcastle United’s hero against Manchester City on Wednesday night, but was unable to finish the game.

The 24-year-old scored the only goal at St James’ Park, as the Magpies knocked Man City out of the Carabao Cup in dramatic fashion.

Isak netted his fourth goal of the season thanks to a brilliant bit of play from Joelinton, whose hard work ensured that the Sweden international had a tap in at the back post.

Newcastle were then able to hold on, with the Toon defence keeping a fourth consecutive clean sheet. However, it was a very different back four that included Tino Livramento making his first start for the club.

It was an incredible night for Newcastle, but the only low moment came when Isak was forced off with an injury. He was replaced by Miguel Almiron in the 62nd minute.

Losing the record signing would be a major blow, especially so soon after Harvey Barnes’ injury, but it sounds like Isak is going to be alright.

After the 1-0 win against Manchester City, Isak spoke to Sky Sports Football on the touchline. He was asked about the injury he picked up during the victory.

“I think I’m okay,” he said.

“Hopefully it’s nothing, I think I’m okay.”

Newcastle should rest Isak on Saturday regardless

Isak seemed fairly confident that the injury is nothing to worry about, which is good news. Of course, we await official confirmation from the club in the coming days.

Regardless, he will likely return to the bench on Satuday when the Magpies face Burnley in the Premier League. Eddie Howe will be keen to rotate again, which should result in Callum Wilson starting.

The 31-year-old was not involved on Wednesday night, and is now joined by Isak at the top of Newcastle’s scoring charts.

They have four goals each so far this season, as they push each other to extraordinary heights.
