Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has heaped praise on two players after the Magpies knocked Manchester City out of the Carabao Cup.
It was an incredible night at St James’ Park, where Alexander Isak’s second half goal was enough to send Newcastle into the next round of the competition and knock out Manchester City.
That never looked like it would be possible at half time. Pep Guardiola’s side dominated the first 45 minutes, with Eddie Howe‘s side barely touching the ball.
But Newcastle were much better in the second half, and managed to grab the only goal of the game. Howe’s side played with more intensity and got in City’s faces, which in turn got the crowd up and involved.
There was a late rally from Man City, who tried to apply some pressure, but they could not penetrate a Newcastle defence that included Tino Livramento making his first ever Toon start.

He was outstanding on Wednesday night, and won praise from Alan Shearer.
Alan Shearer hails ‘magnificent’ Livramento as Newcastle beat Man City
Immediately after the full time whistle, Shearer took to Twitter to give his opinion on Newcastle advancing to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
He wrote: “What a great second half performance down the hill. Livramento magnificent, Dummett superb.”

What a turnaround from Newcastle in the Carabao Cup
The first half was pretty grim, but the second half was compeltely different.
And the two players who Shearer mentioned were immense. Livramento showed that he is the perfect replacement for Kieran Trippier when the time comes, while Paul Dummett did not look like a player who had not started a game of senior football in more than a year.
The local lad was exceptional at the back, having been named in Howe’s starting XI at centre-back alongside Jamaal Lascelles. He was also excellent, on what was his first start of the season.
Newcastle were outstanding in the second half, and have been able to record a famous victory against last season’s treble winners. And the result is even more impressive considering the amount of changes Howe made to his side.
Like every Toon fan, Shearer was amazed with what he saw on Wednesday night, in what could be the start of another incredible cup run.
